Merlino - We are still the best place to live

SANTA Teresa’s newly grassed oval, which has been years in making, was overrun by a team of excited wild horses after the entrance gate was left open.

In a Facebook post, Atyenhenge Atherre Aboriginal Corporation, which first requested the oval in 2017, said the horses didn’t cause any damage, but did leave behind a few surprises.

“They weren’t there for long and we did a poop collection,” the post read.

The post also asked that the community do their best to keep the area around the oval clean after some rubbish was left behind around the fence.

Melbourne Football Club, in conjunction with AFLNT, the NT Government and Melbourne Cricket Club, first launched the project to grass the red dirt oval four years ago.

Residents of the town, 80km southeast of Alice Springs, were told to keep off the oval while they patiently waited for the grass to grow on what would become the only grassed footy oval in the region.

The oval was officially opened last week to great excitement in the community and was aptly named the “MCG of the Desert”.
