Ali Curung dust storm captured on camera

A colossal dust storm right in the heart of the Territory has been compared to a cult Aussie film franchise after it was immortalised on video.

Videos posted on Facebook at the end of January show a dust storm rolling through the Barkly near Ali Curung.

Barkly Regional Council Mayor Sid Vashist shared a video of the storm on Facebook, commenting “I can assure you this isn’t a Mad Max Movie …”

Mr Vashist said the video, taken by James Standen, captured the storm near the Ali Curung watermelon farm on January 28.

“One of the biggest dust storms we have seen out there!” he said online.

“Let’s hope to see a decent rain that hopefully follows …”

Barkly MLA Steve Edgington also posted a video of the dust storm, asking his followers if they’d ever seen anything like it before.

While some commenters posted previous dust storms, much of the discourse descended into an argument about buffel grass.
