Two of the Northern Territory’s best young prospects have been invited to a camp for the next wave of potential Australian Olympians following a great month for the NT in the pool at national champs.

Macey Sheridan and Liam Brown will join a cohort of some of the best up and coming swimmers from across the country at the Next Wave Invitational Competition Camp in Canberra from July 6-12.

The group of 64 age athletes born between 2008 and 2012 will gain racing experience at the Australian Institute of Sport with an eye at being future Dolphins at the 2032 Olympics.

Sheridan has been among the best age swimmers in the country for the past three years, recently adding to her medal haul at the National Age Championships with three golds and a bronze.

She won gold in the 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 50m backstroke, breaking NT records for 15-girls in both the 100m free and 50m backstroke, while her bronze came in the 50m freestyle.

She further made history as the youngest recipient of the NT Sportsperson of the Year, backing up her NT Junior Sportsperson of the Year from 2024.

Meanwhile, Brown was a strong competitor throughout the competition coming away with his first nationals’ medal with a bronze in the 200m freestyle, lowering the NT record to 1:54.40.

Both swimmers are based at the Darwin Swimming Club and are coached by Tim Few.

Former Australian head coach and National Team support coach Leigh Nugent said the Next Wave camp would provide meaningful experiences for athletes before international exposure.

It follows a national championships where 15 national records were set suggesting a rise in talent across the country.

“It’s those athletes in the mid-teenage years that perform exceptionally well at nationals who tend to be, as our history shows, the ones to become our podium placers,” Nugent said.

“Next Wave will provide the tools that these future Dolphins need to stand on those Olympic, Commonwealth and World Championships podiums.”
