Replay: Palmerston Magpies v Wanderers - 2024-25 NTFL Round 4

Wanderers have finally got themselves in the winner’s column with a promising win over the Palmerston Magpies.

Fresh off the bye, the Muk Muk were too good for a depleted Pies, quashing the black and whites hopes of back-to-back victories.

Despite trailing after the first the Eagles were never in doubt, kicking their way to a 14.11 (95) to 9.10 (64) victory.

A frantic opening quarter had the contest on a knife’s edge as neither side was giving an inch.

More accurate kicking got the Pies in the lead but nothing could have prepared the home side for the attacking onslaught they would endure in the following 20 minutes.

A six and a half minute blitz in the back end of the second sealed the match for the visitors as they caught a goal scoring fever in front of the sticks.

Jak Trewin cut the Pies defenders to bits, and without key fly-in Tristen Waack at the back to organise the troops, the Muk Muk kicked five majors in a row without a rebuttal.

Jaxon East was integral to everything positive for Wanderers, with their forays forward usually having his fingerprints on it.

The visitors had ample opportunity to further the hurt more than they did in the third but some wayward kicking kept the Pies with a chance.

Much like the first term the final 20 minutes was a slugfest that yielded little in terms of attacking success.

“It was good to finally get a win to be honest,” East said.

“It was bloody slippery and wet out there but it was an unreal game for us.

“I reckon that’s the best full match performance I’ve been a part of (for Wanderers) and the best we’ve played as a team.

“This is good for us after last year which was a hard season, but yeah it’s so good to get the win.

A bit of a larrikin and trouble stirrer out in the middle, East said he had a bit of fun matching up against delisted Essendon Bomber Nick Hind.

“There was a bit of banter between us and him out there,” he said.

“But for me, I love that stuff, it keeps you focused and at the end of the day it all stays out there (on the field).”

PREVIEW

Chasing two wins in a row for the first time since rounds 5 and 6 in the 2022-23 season, Palmerston have been bolstered by the inclusion of a player with 95 games of AFL experience for the match against Wanderers.

Nick Hind, who played for both Essendon and St Kilda before being recently delisted, joins the likes of Nayef Hamad and Tristen Waack in a Palmerston side that is building nicely into the season.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of the match from 8pm on Friday.

The Magpies won for the first time since beating Tiwi Bombers on February 11, 2023 when successful against Darwin Buffaloes last weekend.

They had an influx of key ins for that win, including Hamad and Waack, and with the momentum behind them, as well as the addition of speedstar Hind, they will be confident of another big win.

For the Wanderers, it will be their first game in two weeks and they will be eager to build on solid displays against two early pacesetters - Southern Districts and Tiwi Bombers.

Jaxon East has been a ball magnet through the middle for the past couple of seasons and will play an important part.

Watch the full replay at the end of the game.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
