The completion of 12 new homes in Tennant Creek marks the end of a $6.9m partnership under the Barkly Regional Deal to build a more secure future for key workers in the Barkly.
Housing, Local Government and Community Development Minister Steve Edgington, who is also the Member for Barkly, said the partnership with Housing Australia and Venture Housing was a huge milestone.
“These homes are a critical step toward a more secure future for key workers who deliver necessary services to the Barkly, as well as the more vulnerable members of our community,” he said.
“We’ve made 2025 a year of action, certainty and security and housing milestones like this are key to our strategy to rebuild the economy, strengthen our regional communities and restore our unique lifestyle.
“It is great to see another Barkly Regional Deal initiative being finalised and providing benefit to the community.”
The $6.9m partnership marks the first Territory-targeted project to be funded by Housing Australia, through the Australian Government’s National Housing Infrastructure Facility Social and Affordable Housing.
CEO of Venture Housing Company, Tim Sunwoo, said it was “an excellent example of collaboration and supports our remote region”.
Of the 12 homes, built by construction company Habitat NT five will be allocated to residents on the Territory’s eight – 10 year social housing waitlist.
The other seven will be affordable homes leased at subsidised rents to eligible working households on low to moderate incomes.
Venture Housing begins construction of three new social houses in Tennant Creek in the coming month.
“Working with longstanding community housing providers provides real, on-the-ground results, ensuring more people have access to safe, secure housing when they need it most,” he said.
Construction is already under way on eight homes in Darwin’s northern suburbs, with work commencing in December 2024, and five homes in Gillen, Alice Springs, as part of a project to deliver up to 100 new social housing properties across the NT.
