New inbound lanes in the Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road overpass project will open to traffic on Tuesday, marking 70 per cent completion for the project.
The inbound lanes of Tiger Brennan Drive heading towards Darwin are now connected to the existing lanes, allowing road users to travel in both directions under the overpass.
At the western end of the new works, detour lanes have been constructed to allow final tie in of the new inbound lanes to the existing road where a significant level difference existed.
The project is being delivered by local company, Sitzler, who estimated there was about six months left before completion.
“We’re really, really pleased with the progress we’ve made on this project,” director Michael Sitzler said.
“Once we get the inbound traffic living, we can then take possession site on the north area … we’ll be working 24-hour shifts, shifting about 150 cubic meters to that location and compacting it in the night shift operation, so it’s a really exciting time on the project.”
The next milestone for the project will be the completion of the Tiger Brennan Drive outbound on and off ramps and the connection of the northern end of Berrimah Rd, which is anticipated to open to traffic in September 2024.
The $165m dollar project, jointly funded by the federal and Northern Territory governments, aims to improve road safety at the notorious intersection, reduce traffic delays during peak hours and increase the traffic flow for freight connectivity.
Chief Minister Eva Lawler said “20,000 Territorians use this road everyday, and my government is making this route safer and more efficient”.
“Local Territory Company Sitzler are completing these works – with 210 businesses also being involved in delivering this project, and 1,350 workers involved, including 161 Indigenous workers and 32 apprentices and trainees,” she said.
Solomon MP Luke Gosling OAM said the project was “an economic boon”.
“It’s not only going to make what was a dangerous intersection much safer, but it’s also going to get goods to the market much quicker,” he said.
