Troubled former Darwin real estate agent Suzi Milgate has returned to the court on fresh charges of conducting her business without a licence, labelling the prosecution a “political witch hunt”.
Ms Milgate fronted the Darwin Local Court on Tuesday where she stands charged alongside her business Milgate Real Estate Pty Ltd with one count each of being an unlicensed real estate agent.
During the brief hearing, Ms Milgate asked Judge Alan Woodcock if she could “start reading something out very quickly” but Mr Woodcock said “no, we make submissions in court, we don’t read things out”.
When asked if she had any submissions to make, Ms Milgate said the prosecution was “politically motivated and it should be dismissed”.
“I’m just letting you know I’ll be pleading not guilty but this is a political matter that’s actually being heard in (the NT Civil and Administrative Tribunal),” she said.
“It’s a political witch hunt to further harm my reputation and should be dismissed.”
Ms Milgate told the court she didn’t have a lawyer but she did have an unspecified “medical condition”.
In adjourning the case until September 30, Mr Woodcock said it would then be set down for a contested hearing.
“What I’ll ask you to do is to give your email to the prosecution so she can send you the brief of evidence and you can look at that, get advice if you wish, and form your own position on that,” he said.
“Then on that day you can tell the court whatever you like in terms of relevant submissions and it’ll be set for hearing on another day.”
Ms Milgate is also set to face a judge alone trial in the Local Court in October on a separate, unrelated charge of allegedly assaulting former Chief Minister Natasha Fyles at the Nightcliff markets last year.
