Finke Desert Race organisers have released a statement following the death of a 60-year-old, who passed away on impact when a vehicle veered off the road.

FINKE Desert Race organisers have released a statement following the tragic death of 60-year-old Canberran Nigel Harris, who died on impact when a vehicle veered off the road and into spectators.

“The Finke Desert Race mourns the loss of a spectator yesterday after a tragic incident on the track,” it read.

“Together with all event parties, Motorsport Australia and Finke Desert Race are undertaking an investigation into the incident and will assist and co-operate with all relevant authorities with their respective investigations.

“Motorsport Australia and the Finke Desert Race Committee is also providing ongoing support and assistance to all competitors, officials and those associated with the event.

“The Northern Territory Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the cause of the incident and calling for any spectators who may have witnessed the incident or have dashcam or video footage – to contact police immediately on 131 444.”

Finke Desert Race committee president Antony Yoffa extended his sympathies to all those affected by the incident.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family, friends and all those who have been impacted by this incident,” he said.

“We appreciate the efforts of all officials and volunteers across the weekend and commend the patience and understanding of competitors and spectators during this particularly difficult time.

“On behalf of the Finke Desert Race committee, I’d also like to acknowledge the work of emergency services and first responders across the weekend.”

“As investigations remain ongoing, the Committee will not be making any further comment.”
