Darwin members of Europe’s Baltic States have gathered at the steps of the Territory’s Parliament House to voice their opposition at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Around 40 people attended the rally for Ukraine, which was a joint event organised by the Latvian and Urkaine Darwin communities, with participation by the Estonian and Lithuanian communities.

President of the Latvian Association of Darwin Reinis Dancis said the war in Ukraine was not just a war for Ukrainian sovereignty; but rather a war for the future of freedom in Europe.

“It is a war for the values that bind the Western world together: democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Ukraine’s fight is our fight. Their freedom is our freedom, “ Mr Dancis said.

“We may be here in Darwin, 12,000 km from Kyiv, however we stand together, shoulder to shoulder in support of Ukrainian friends as we reflect on an essential pillar of global peace and stability — freedom.

“Freedom is the cornerstone of our shared values, the bedrock of our societies, and the very essence of what makes nations thrive.

“Latvia stands with Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and freedom.

“We stand with NATO in its mission to protect democracy and stability.

“And we call upon our allies to remain resolute in the face of adversity.

“We must remember that freedom is not free. It requires vigilance, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to our shared values.

“Together, as a united alliance, we can ensure that the light of freedom will continue to shine brightly in Latvia, in Ukraine, and across the world.”

President of the Estonian-Australian Association of the NT Manfred Mletsin supported Mr Dancis’ comments adding: We understand how important it is to stand with Ukrainians in these times and it is important to support countries that are being bullied by dictatorships.”
