Police have charged a young northern suburbs man with a string of child abuse material offences following a raid at his home on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced the Darwin Local Court on Wednesday charged with producing and transmitting child abuse material.

Senior Sergeant Matt Akers said the charges were laid after Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team police seized a number of computers, mobile devices and data storage devices from his Nightcliff home.

“We will continue to investigate all reports of child abuse and pursue the offenders who are exploiting our children,” he said.

“The Northern Territory JACET will continue to work with our national partners to disrupt and prosecute anyone involved in producing, transmitting or consuming child abuse material.”

Australian Federal Police spokesman Mal Bickford said the operation was an example of co-operation between the AFP and NT Police.

“The charges demonstrate how closely police around Australia work together and the commitment to investigate and charge (alleged) offenders believed to be involved in child exploitation and sexual abuse,” he said.

“This arrest should serve as a warning that law enforcement is dedicated to fighting child sexual abuse and bringing those who (allegedly) commit these offences before the court.

“Our investigators are relentless in their pursuit of anyone sharing or accessing child abuse material.”

Anyone who has any information about people involved in child abuse and exploitation are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or contact the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation at www.accce.gov.au/report

The man will return to court on April 18.
