Darwin will host its first-ever Mini Paralympics building off the already inspiring journeys of Territory athletes and allow people with disabilities to experience sport in an inclusive environment.

The Territory initiative will take place at the Darwin Netball Stadium on October 15 with students and community members with disability given the opportunity to compete in Paralympic sports.

Participants will have the chance to try wheelchair basketball, boccia, seated volleyball, badminton and athletics.

The Mini Paralympics has already been in Alice Springs, where students recently took part in athletics, wheelchair basketball, boccia and badminton and had access to coaches and equipment.

Among them was 14-year-old Quade Stone who got his first taste of wheelchair basketball and has since joined the NTSA Para Futures program with sights on the Brisbane 2032 Paralympics.

Briseis Brittain is another talented para-athlete from Ramingining who has cerebral palsy and is supported by the futures program.

Brittan has represented the NT in sprinting and long jump and this week makes her international debut for Australia in the 200m and 400m at the World Para Games.

People, Sport and Culture minister Jinson Charls said the Mini Paralympics is about breaking down barriers and creating pathways for young people with disabilities.

“It’s fantastic to see the NT developing programs that not only give people a chance to participate but also help the next generation of Paralympic athletes realise their dreams,” he said.

“I wish Briseis the best of luck at the upcoming World Para Games. Her determination and success show just what’s possible, and she’s inspiring young Territorians everywhere.”

The Mini Paralympics is delivered by the Northern Territory Sports Academy in partnership with School of Sport Education NT, Paralympics Australia and the Australian Sports Commission.

The NT and Australian governments are backing the next generation of Paralympians through the NTSA Para Pathways Program, supported by an $879,000 investment from the ASC’s Supercharge Multi-sport Pathways Initiative.
