The social media-savvy head of Darwin’s Catholic faith has warned his congregants about the dangers of artificial intelligence.
Bishop Charles Gauci of the Diocese Of Darwin took to his TikTok page to air concerns about Chat GPT and a rising reliance on technology.
“In the course of my life I have seen tremendous changes, accelerating changes,” he starts the video.
“Technology has leapt forwards in leaps and bounds.
“You probably have heard of (Chat) GPT and the amazing phenomenon hitting us at the moment.”
While acknowledging the “wonderful gift” the platform provides, Mr Gauci also issued a warning against using it too often.
“I want to put a word of caution my dear young friends,” he said.
“Let’s not lose our humanity in the midst of all this — we don’t just communicate with words over a microphone or screen.
“We communicate with smell, touch, we get vibes from each other’s presence.”
He went on to explain the three pillars of being a human, which also happened to be made up of the same initials.
“We must acknowledge the spiritual reality who we call God, there are human beings that we interact with and of course technology,” he said.
“So you have God and people first and then technology.”
The Diocese of Darwin TikTok has now posted more than 20 videos to its 45 followers while ChatGPT was reported to have reached 100 million users in February, just two months after it was launched.
ChatGPT was contacted for a response.
“As an AI language model, I don’t have personal opinions or beliefs,” the bot said.
