The Darwin Cup Carnival is officially up and running, the Carnival kicking off with the DCOH Guineas Day, bringing racing fans in the hundreds to Fannie Bay on Saturday
The Darwin Turf Club was the place to be with thrilling racing action and plenty of fashion on beginning a month of racing.
Darwin Turf Club chairman Craig Treize said it was fantastic to get the Darwin Cup Carnival back in action starting with a packed DCOH Guineas Day.
“There’s a fantastic crowd on track, everyone’s dressed up, the carnival is well and truly here and we are looking forward for what this month will bring,” he said.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better day, everyone’s having a great time and there’s a positive vibe around town for the Darwin Cup.
“Ticket sales have been good, the corporate stuff sold out early in the piece but we need our locals to come down and show their support to make what is always a good carnival a great one.
“Everyone was keen for this one though, it’s like the first ball of the season, the horses are here and the track is ready for the month ahead.”
Michael Murphy was in Darwin for the first time and actually in town for the rodeo at the Waterfront the night before, but the love of racing pulled him to Fannie Bay.
“I bought bulls up for the rodeo so this is my first visit to Darwin and we thought we’d come out here then head home on Monday,” he said.
“I enjoy the races and go to a few of them, it’s always a good day out and while this is different it’s beautiful to come out here.
“The rodeo went really well, the crowd was awesome, the cowboys rode well and the bulls bucked, it was a really good show.”
