Alice Springs brewery briefly evacuated over fire caused by ‘electrical failure’, blame laid on demisters

A popular Red Centre brewery was briefly evacuated over a small fire caused by an “electrical fault” – which is being pinned on the misting system giving up after too many 40C-plus days.

On Sunday, Alice Springs Brewing Co briefly had to evacuate its flagship venue in Ross, south of Alice Springs, due to a fire caused by an “electrical failure” in the water misting system, Alice Springs fire station acting senior station officer Andrew Koop said.

“It was in a bit of a difficult corner, right in the back corner of the storeroom which was full of a lot of things, so they were lucky that they noticed it and they put it out before it could have got worse,” he said.

Mr Koop said they were notified of the fire just before 5.30pm on Sunday.

The fire was already put out by brewery staff when the fireys arrived, Mr Koop said.

Alice Springs Brewing Co owner Kyle Pearson said he was really happy with how the team reacted to the situation.

While down a misting system for a week, Mr Pearson said the real loss was all punters “having to leave half-drunk beers on the table” during the evacuation.

Speaking generally, Mr Koop said it was important to not leave appliances running unattended on hot days because if they did fail “minor damage could lead to much greater damage”.

“So always try not to leave things running unattended and be mindful of what you have operating and perhaps monitor things as much as you can just so that if there’s any problems you can respond straight away,” he said.

Mr Pearson said the venue was back open half an hour after the fire and was carrying on “business as usual”.

He thanked the fireys for their quick response.
