An interstate umpire has allegedly been assaulted on a bus because they were wearing umpiring attire while on the way to adjudicate an NTFL match.
It’s alleged a member of the public assaulted the umpire while they were travelling on public transport on November 30.
The alleged assault is understood to have taken place because they were wearing AFL Northern Territory umpire attire.
It is understood the umpire was heading to TIO Stadium when the assault happened, but was undeterred from taking part in matches, even helping out at junior games the next day.
The AFLNT Umpires Association released a statement on Tuesday saying they condemned the behaviour and had been in contact with the relevant authorities.
“The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities, as well as AFL Northern Territory,” their statement read.
“The NTFLUA has worked closely with the affected umpire throughout this matter and continues to explore options for alternative transport for the umpire’s use for the remainder of the NTFL season.
“There is absolutely no place for violence against any umpire.
“The NTFLUA condemns the alleged assault of one of our own in the strongest possible terms.”
AFL Northern Territory said they were aware of the incident had been working with the umpire in the days since.
“We take this matter extremely seriously, and our priority is the wellbeing and safety of the umpire involved,” their statement read.
“We have been in contact with the umpire and will continue to provide support over the coming days.
“We do not condone violence in any form and will work through the appropriate processes.”
NT Police have been contacted for comment.
