Northern Territory Emergency Services (NTES) has launched its first regional training hub in Arnhem Land, marking a major step forward in its aim of delivering high-quality training and services to remote communities.

The opening event brought together NTES volunteer units from Ramingining, Nhulunbuy, Galiwinku, Gapuwiyak and Maningrida, as well as representatives from NT Fire and Rescue, for a combined training weekend in Nhulunbuy.

NTES staff and subject matter experts travelled from Katherine, Palmerston and Darwin to share their knowledge and help deliver essential courses.

Volunteers were provided with the skills and knowledge to enable safe and effective response and recovery service to operations requiring four-wheel drive and vehicle recovery skills, along with Land Search Techniques.

They also received training in chainsaw operations, giving them the skills and knowledge to trim and cut felled trees, and to inspect, maintain and test a range of equipment.

With limited training opportunities available in Arnhem Land, NTES Chief Officer Wayne Snell said that the hub represented a new chapter in how the service supported and empowered volunteers.

“The weekend was a great opportunity to bring volunteers together with to build skills and share knowledge, with hands on sessions helping build critical capability in the region,” he said.

The exercise, Mr Snell said, was also an opportunity to strengthen the ability of NTES across the Territory, build connections and collaborate to ensure the team is ready to respond in an emergency.

“Thank you to everyone involved for your contributions, your efforts are a true representation of what it means to build a connected community through volunteering,” he said.

“These really are people doing extraordinary things.”
