Tasmania Police have revealed the two victims of Friday night’s double fatality rollover at Somerset in Tasmania’s northwest were a 20-year-old from Wynyard and a 27-year-old from Somerset.

Inspector Shane LeFevre said the two young men were understood to have travelled from the Somerset direction before rolling their vehicle, a white 2012 Toyota LandCruiser utility.

One of the victims was thrown from the vehicle, which landed in a culvert at the side of the road.

Both men were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Inspector LeFevre declined to reveal which of the men was the driver and whether it was the driver or passenger who was thrown from the vehicle.

Investigators remained on scene into Saturday afternoon.

The rollover occurred out the front of the home of 30-year Somerset resident Leanne, who asked not to provide her last name.

She said she was “flabbergasted” at the “really awful” accident.

“I was watching TV pretty loudly and heard a bang which sounded like an impact against a tree,” she said.

“We get lots of road noise, hoons and trucks, it’s regular so I half-convinced myself it was nothing, I listened and there was no noise, it was pitch dark so I convinced myself it was a truck passing.

“Then I heard sirens and straight away my stomach dropped, I looked out my window and it was a mass of flashing lights.

“They were there for hours.

“I didn’t know it was a fatal until this morning.”

Floral tributes had been left at the scene attached to a tree which the rolling vehicle collided into it.

Various bits of vehicle detritus also remained scattered on the shoulder.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported both deceased were located in the utility’s tray. This was on the basis of Tasmania Police advice that the two men “were located deceased upon arrival of emergency services in a 2012 white Toyota Land Cruiser tray”.
