Two motorcyclists are dead and police are on the hunt for a man who fled the scene of one of the crash sites in a day of carnage in the state’s North West.
Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Craig Harvey said emergency services attended the scene of a crash on the Murchison Highway at Yolla at around 9.25am on Friday involving two cars and a motorcycle.
“Sadly, as a result of the crash, a man has died and two other men have been taken to hospital with injuries from the crash,” Inspector Harvey said.
“One of the vehicles has been identified as a stolen vehicle, the driver of which has fled the scene.”
Meanwhile a 77-year-old Elliot man has died in a single-vehicle crash at Brittons Swamp 20km southwest of Smithton.
Police and emergency services were called to the scene about 12.15pm, after reports a motorcycle had left the road. The rider was treated by paramedics, but died at the scene.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
As of Friday afternoon, Inspector Harvey said police were still searching for the driver from the Yolla crash.
“We currently have significant resources in the Yolla area, including the Westpac helicopter and numerous uniformed and plainclothes officers searching for that person as we speak.
“We will leave no stone unturned to locate this person, identify them and bring them to justice.
“We have no set time frame as to when the search will finish. We will continue for as long as it takes to find the person that we are looking for.”
Inspector Harvey said crash investigators were still determining the cause of the crash.
“If anybody has any information in relation to the whereabouts of the person who fled the scene in the stolen vehicle, we would ask them to call police on 131 444 or on Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
The person who fled the scene has been described as a caucasian male of slim build who is around 30 years old and about 186cm tall.
Inspector Harvey said the man had an unshaven beard and was wearing a dark jumper.
“We would ask anybody that if they sight that person or anyone acting suspiciously in the Yolla area to call us immediately and not approach the person.”
