In preparation for North Queensland’s cyclone season GPs, pharmacy and residential aged care staff took part in crucial emergency planning to make sure they can continue to provide assistance in times of disaster.

Covering emergency management plans, stages of evacuation, prevention, preparedness and recovery phases, the training brought together health workers from across the region.

Run by the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) in partnership with Townsville Hospital and Health Service, Townsville Local Disaster Management and District Disaster Management Group the training had a focus on ensuring health workers had plans in place to continue their essential work, even during an emergency event.

NQPHN Interim Chief Executive Officer Ben Tooth said GP, pharmacy and aged care staff were at the heart of healthcare.

“General practitioners, pharmacists, and health professionals, including those in residential aged care homes, are often the first point of contact for community members,” Mr Tooth said.

“Emergency planning is about being prepared and knowing what to do in all disaster situations.”

“The recent training addressed a range of emergency responses, including bushfires, significant weather such as a cyclone or flood, like we have seen in recent years, and other health events including the pandemic.”

Mr Tooth said all health care professionals are advised to update their details on the NQPHN website and should review their website’s resources links to make sure they are up to date.

Another tool that can be used during natural disasters is the NQPHN Emergency SMS Alert System, which GP’s, pharmacies and aged care homes can opt in to use.

Following the 2023-2024 wet season, cyclones and the COVID-19 pandemic Mr Tooth said the SMS Alert System played a crucial role in emergency response efforts.

“The purpose of the SMS Alert System for health professionals is to provide an avenue for clear and immediate communications to healthcare providers that’s specific and localised to the relevant to the current emergency,” Mr Tooth said.
