TASMANIA will get its slice of top level women’s footy action with the North Melbourne Tasmania Kangaroos scheduled to play two games in the state in the 2021 NAB AFLW roster released yesterday.
The Tassie Kangas will take on the women’s team of the AFL’s reigning premier Richmond in a blockbuster at North Hobart Oval on February 27, and a Daisy Pearce-led Melbourne at UTas Stadium on March 14.
North Hobart Football Club president Craig Martin said North Melbourne had requested to the AFL to play at the spiritual home of Tasmanian football for the third year in a row.
Games at North Hobart are proven crowd-pleasers and the Kangaroos will be looking to remain undefeated there after wins over Carlton and Adelaide in the past two season.
“North Melbourne told us they want to play here at North Hobart,” Martin said.
“We are absolutely delighted to have them back again.
“We got 5000 people here to the first one when Gillan McLachlan and members of the AFL executive came down, and 2843 to last year’s game against Adelaide.
“If Covid-19 had not intervened, we thought we were in the running to host a North Melbourne final here earlier this year but the whole world got turned upside down.
“The AFL loves North Hobart as a venue for women’s footy.
“We’ve put on a good show every time the AFLW has played here and we are delighted to host another game next year _ it’s brilliant for footy, for Hobart and for the state.”
The AFLW scrapped its conference system, and among the highlights of the nine-round 2021 season are the inaugural Indigenous Round, Pride Round and Good for Footy Round, and a three-week top six finals series.”
