Nick, Scott and Adam Costello will play together for Bell Post Hill in the GDFL next season

Three brothers have decided to pull on the same football jumpers next season and help out their mum, who refused to miss her sons’ games each weekend.

For the first time in a long time, Julie Costello will not have to trudge between multiple Geelong football grounds to catch a glimpse of her sons on a Saturday.

Bell Post Hill’s Nick Costello has been joined at the Panthers for 2023 by his brothers Scott and Adam, who have made their way to the club through stints at Bell Park.

Nick said the brothers decided to play together at the end of last season, when Bell Post Hill was knocked out of finals by eventual premiers Bannockburn.

“Scott was keen, he came around and watched a few games and was keen to play footy again, it was more trying to convince Adam to come across,” he said.

“I’m coming to my end now, I’ve only really got a couple of years left so I was trying to get one or two years together.

“Also it’s more for mum, she’s our biggest fan, so we wanted to do it for her and get some success together.

“She never misses a game, she’d leave at half time, or three quarter time, to make it to the next game.

“It is harder and harder to get motivated each year, so I think we’ll get to the end of the season and see where I’m at about playing again.”

The Panthers have recruited heavily ahead of the 2023 season, with star midfielder Boe Collins the club’s biggest signing.

Adam, who played under recently-departed Dragons coach Shane Jack, said the turnover of leadership at the club did not cause him to move on.

“Nick only having one or two seasons left of playing probably made it pretty easy to make that call,” he said.

“I’ve always grown up watching him play and haven’t played with him before, so to be able to tick that one off and get on the field with him will be great.

“We’ll probably slot into that forward line and play at Nick’s feet a bit, it’ll make it a bit easier for mum to just follow us around the ground rather than driving from Colac to Bell Post Hill some weekends.”

Scott said winning a premiership was the goal for the season.

“Playing with the brothers will be awesome, it’s the reason I’ve got back into it,” he said.

“I came down and watched about 10 games, and it’s really hard to watch footy consistently and not want to pull the boots on and win a flag.

“Mum and dad are our biggest fans, mum would wear a Bell Park jacket in the morning, then have a Bell Post Hill one in the car ready to go.

“Winning a flag with the brothers, and for mum and dad, would be the icing on the cake.”
