HARNESSING greater community partnerships will help the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery grow and innovate in the future, the museum’s new Board of Trustees chair Brett Torossi says.
The State Government has today announced Ms Torossi as TMAG’s next chairperson, replacing Geoff Willis, who recently retired.
Ms Torossi’s appointment adds to her various other board appointments including Tasmanian Heritage Council chairwoman and chair of Tourism Tasmania’s Audit Finance and Risk Committee.
Arts Minister Elise Archer said she was delighted to announce Ms Torossi as TMAG’s first female Board chair alongside the museum’s director Janet Carding, who has been reappointed for a further five years.
Tasmania is now the only Australian state where leadership roles at a state museum – Minister for the Arts, Chair of Trustees and Director – are all filled by women.
Ms Torossi will be joined by two new Board members appointed for three year terms, Andrew Catchpole, Chief Strategy Officer from Hydro Tasmania, and Tasmanian author Heather Rose.
Ms Torossi said she was eager to embark on priority projects including delivering the museum’s new Children’s Exhibition and digitising the State Collection.
“By introducing digital innovations in our galleries, we will be more accessible, more open, and more connected to both local and global communities,” she said.
“With more support from the community we can do more, and partnerships, donations and bequests already underpin many of our initiatives.
“A priority for me is to grow this area of TMAG, and ensure we have a firm financial foundation so we can continue to innovate in the future.”

Ms Carding said Ms Torossi’s appointment would benefit TMAG as it looks to build on recent achievements.
“It is wonderful for us to have someone of Brett’s experience coming in as our Chair of Trustees, given the exciting period of activity ahead at TMAG,” she said.
“I am proud that over the last five years we have put together several award-winning exhibitions, including Tempest, The Remarkable Tasmanian Devil and kanalaritja – An Unbroken String.”
