Two women dead after stopping to ‘assist injured animal’ on Melbourne motorway
Police are investigating after two women were killed on a busy Melbourne highway while reportedly enacting a devastating deed of kindness.
Two women have tragically died in Melbourne after police suspect they were trying to help an injured kangaroo on a motorway.
Officers said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision in Craigieburn, in Melbourne’s north, on Thursday evening.
Emergency services were called to reports that two women had been struck by a car on the M31 Hume Freeway just after 7.30pm.

“It is believed the pair had stopped to assist an injured animal before they were struck,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
A 30-year-old from Beveridge, north of Craigieburn, woman died at the scene.
A 30-year-old woman from Thomastown, also in Melbourne’s north, was flown to hospital but died a short time later.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and assisted police.
The speed limit is 100km/hour on the Hume Highway, an 840km route that connects Melbourne and Sydney.
