Seawind Rd Coomera Waters shooting: Police probe links to cocaine bust

Detectives are investigating whether a shooting into the front door of a northern Gold Coast home could be linked to a multimillion-dollar cocaine bust at a border checkpoint.

DETECTIVES are investigating whether the drive-by shooting of a northern Gold Coast home is linked to a multimillion-dollar cocaine bust at a Queensland border checkpoint last month.

Police were called to a property at Seawind Rd, Coomera Waters on Tuesday shortly after 1am after reports bullets had been fired into the front door of a suburban home.

Police are investigating if the shooting is connected to an alleged plot to smuggle millions of dollars worth of cocaine across the Queensland border at Coolangatta on October 30. More than 8kg of the drug was seized from the back of a ute.

The bullets fired into the Coomera Waters property are believed to have just missed the occupants of the home but no one was injured, a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.

The Bulletin understands preliminary investigations indicate the incident may be linked to an outlaw motorcycle gang.

Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said police were looking for a silver Nissan X-Trail reportedly seen in the area around the time of the shooting.

“We’re appealing to any members of the public that saw that type of vehicle in that area last night (to come forward),” Det Insp Ahearn said.

He said it was unclear how many people were involved in the shooting but police were sifting through CCTV.

Two men have been charged over the border coke bust on October 30.

The driver of the vehicle — Trent Andrew Atkinson, 31 — was charged with possession of dangerous drugs.

Bryce Steven Watson, 26, was charged with three counts of possessing a dangerous drugs and possession of a bong. Police are not alleging that Atkinson or Watson have done the shooting.

Police allege cannabis and ecstasy were found in a bag in the footwall of the ute and there was 8.7kg of cocaine bricks in the ute’s tray.

A court has previously heard Atkinson allegedly told police: “I had a job to do and that was get over the border.”

Watson’s lawyer told the Southport Magistrates Court this month his client had no knowledge of the cocaine allegedly found in the ute’s tray.

Both men will appear in court again in December.
