Palmerston residents ready to wet a line as new barra released into lakes

BUCKETLOADS of barra have been released across a number of Palmerston lakes for residents to continue wetting a line.

This week 100 barramundi were released as part of an NT Government initiative to support recreational fishing, tourism and local businesses.

The barra, which were bred locally at the Darwin Aquaculture Centre average about 45cm in size.

All Palmerston lakes have a strict catch and release policy, and anglers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with how to carefully release fish back into the water.

Minister for Recreational Fishing Paul Kirby said fresh barra were the perfect way to encourage beginner anglers and give experienced fishos a challenge.

“It is estimated that recreational fishing brings in around $80 million into the Territory economy each and every year – making it not only a great activity for families, but a significant economic driver,” he said.
