NSW high schools to get real estate, robotics classes in TAFE overhaul

In an effort to equip more students with employable skills, TAFE will be given a facelift to include classes such as real estate and robotics.

Cheap degrees and guaranteed jobs? What you should study in a COVID-19 world

Subjects in real estate, robotics and cyber security will be available to students in every state high school by 2022 in a plan to fast-track teens through TAFE.

The offering, part of the curriculum overhaul, will be delivered virtually and count towards students’ HSC and contribute to their ATAR.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian will announce the 20 new vocational education and training (VET) courses on Tuesday, with the rollout aiming to streamline young people into job-ready courses and fast-track apprenticeships.

The plan will help get students into job-ready TAFE courses, like at this campus in Blacktown.

The students who partake in the program will graduate with nationally recognised VET qualifications, which form part of their HSC.

The plan is part of the government’s promise in the review of the curriculum to give students opportunities for credit towards qualifications in apprenticeships in high-demand areas, including robotics and engineering.

“We want to ensure NSW students receive world class skills training to prepare them for the jobs of the future,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“These courses will help students build skills across emerging industries such as advance manufacturing, technology and engineering.”

The courses will be delivered virtually, with interactive digital lessons.

The 20 courses cover “future industries”, the government says, such as cyber security, big data, accounting, gaming, community and health services.

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said developing the courses online made VET more accessible to remote students in regional NSW.

“These are exciting areas for young people to be studying and puts them in the best place to find a job in dynamic industries,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Students with a keen interest in future-focused courses will be able to link up with others, no matter where they go to school across NSW.”

Year 11 student Sofia Carrizales Cruz is studying real estate at Sydney Secondary College’s Blackwattle Bay Campus — but under current rules the subject does not count towards her HSC.

Sofia said she dreams of being a real estate agent, after being inspired by property TV shows.

“It’s great to get started studying property management at school,” she said.
