JAYE Harris has seen the boom of natural healing in Cairns from her very own yoga studio.
The Yorkeys Yoga instructor said she thought there was a clear trend of Cairns locals turning to alternative medicines.
“People find out about these things through conversations in their community. They end up coming because they might have back pain, or depression, or they just want to finally get off medication,” she said.
Data analysis by demographer Bernard Salt shows people tend to leave Cairns in their 20s and return in their 40s.
That period of travel is being pinpointed as the reason alternative medicine and natural healing is so popular in Cairns.
And Ms Harris said she expected the trend to grow.
“There’s definitely going to be a shift towards more people trying natural healing,” she said. “I’m proud that 75 per cent of my students are new to yoga. It can be quite daunting, but people are willing to try new things.”
She said events like Heartspace, being held this Saturday at Yorkeys Yoga, warmed people to the idea.
“We have some of the best healers in the world right here in Cairns,” she said. “I’m definitely expecting more people to explore the different modes of healing in the future.”
