MYSTERIOUS images have been captured by an infra-red night vision camera near Tully.
Drop bears, Jesus and a possum have been suggested as possible explanations for the photographs by online followers of the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Snapped near Barrett’s Lagoon, 6km south of Tully, two images depict what appears to be a possum, but the second photo is less clear.
A TMR spokeswoman later confirmed pictures were of a mahogany glider.
“Our specially developed launch poles are there to give gliders, like this one, a place to launch from to increase their chances of safely crossing our highways,” she said.
“These little gliders can leap more than 30m at a time. We’ve used cameras on site to keep an eye on things at night and check the gliders are using the poles.”
It’s not the first time a Far North animal has made an appearance on the department’s traffic cameras.
A cockatoo captured by TMR on a Bruce Hwy traffic cam went viral in 2018 when he was caught admiring himself in the reflection of the lens.
