Mum’s fury at Tinder hook-ups for Schoolies

A Brisbane mother has blasted the organisers of next month’s Schoolies festival for encouraging teens to hook up on Tinder.

Your teenager should not go to schoolies

A BRISBANE mum has blasted Gold Coast Schoolies organisers for encouraging teens to hook up on Tinder.

Libby Marshall, whose daughter is in Year 12 at prestigious All Hallows’ School and is attending Schoolies in Surfers Paradise next month, said she was ‘just appalled’ to see an email from organisers spruiking a new partnership with Tinder.

“GET ON THIS,” the email states. “Tinder is coming to Schoolies in 2019 to make every SINGLE moment count.

“Because we know single never has to go home early, knows all the best places and goes home with the wildest stories. Download the app to unlock amazing Schoolies experiences.”

The email ends with the hashtag #SingleNotSorry.

Ms Marshall said she was ‘absolutely flabbergasted’ that Schoolies organisers were encouraging ‘impressionable and vulnerable’ teens to hook up on Tinder.

“I’m just appalled,” she said.

“Tinder is one of the most appalling apps around – it ruins mature age people let alone impressionable and vulnerable teenagers.

“It’s planting the seed that spontaneous, casual sex with anyone is okay and I think it’s completely the wrong message to be sending to our kids.

“It makes me sick in the stomach to think Schoolies is officially sanctioning this sort of thinking.”

Ms Marshall said she attended Schoolies herself about 30 years ago and was “no party pooper”.

“But Schoolies should be a celebration of life and achievement, not just all about sex,” she said.

“Why should we be exposing kids to this? It’s not acceptable. Where is the moral compass of the world?”

Ms Marshall said she was concerned school-leavers could be preyed on by the likes of infamous Gold Coast playboy Gable Tostee, whose Tinder date Warriena Wright plunged to her death from a Surfers Paradise high-rise in 2014.

She has written a formal complaint to Schoolies organisers.

In a statement, Schoolies.com chief executive Matt Lloyd said the Tinder partnership was among “new and exciting experiences” being offered this year.

“Those schoolies who are 18 years of age, will be able to switch on the app’s Festival Mode for the opportunity to gain accessto an exclusive wristband which will unlock a series of VIP experiences to be revealed closer to the two-week event,” he said.
