Man in his 50s dies at Tasmanian beach, children taken to hospital

Emergency services have been called to a beach where a man swimming with children has died amid strong currents.

A man has died and children have been taken to hospital after an incident at a Tasmanian beach on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to Cooee Beach near Burnie, 100km west of Launceston, about 4.30pm.

The man, in his 50s, and several children were “experiencing difficulty in strong currents”, a Tasmanian police spokesperson said.

Surf lifesavers and other emergency services were called, but despite attempted CPR, the man died at the scene.

The children were taken to the North West Regional Hospital for observation.
