Winning numbers drawn as one Australian cashes in on $100m Powerball

Millions of Australians are scrambling to check if they have won this week’s $100m Powerball draw. Here are the winning numbers.

Who is SA's $150m Powerball winner?

One lucky Australian has cashed in on the third biggest jackpot offered in Australian lotto this year, winning a whopping $100 million.

The winning numbers were drawn on Thursday evening: 16; 24; 11; 4; 10; 18; 23 and powerball; 6.

The winning ticket was purchased in Brisbane, but as the winning entry was not registered to a player’s card, the identity of the ticket holder remains a mystery.

It was purchased in-store from one of The Lott’s outlets on Brisbane’s northside.

This week’s $100m powerball prize is the third biggest jackpot offered in Australian lotto this year, and the sixth biggest in history.

Up to half of all Australian adults were expected to have entered in Thursday nights draw, The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said.

“If just one person takes home the entire $100 million prize on Thursday night, they’ll not only receive a substantial boost to their bank account but also share the crown of Australia’s third biggest lottery winner ever,” he said.

“Only five Aussies know what it’s like to win a lottery prize of $100 million or more, but perhaps we’ll add to that tally on Thursday night.

“The idea of winning this life-changing jackpot is sure to get Aussies dreaming big this week.”

HUGE LOTTO WINS

Australia’s best lottery winning hot spots have been revealed, with Victoria again taking out the top spot for the most division one prizes in Australia in the 2023-24 financial year.

While Victoria racked up the most top wins with 133, NSW scored a whopping $679.2 million worth of division one prize money, according to data from The Lott.

The NSW tally was boosted by a bonanza of Oz Lotto and Powerball jackpots, including one of the two division one winners from the record-breaking $200 million Powerball prize up for grabs in February.

According to previous financial year data crunched by The Lott, a total of 344 millionaires were created by division one wins – the equivalent of almost one a day.

NSW topped the millionaires list, with 117 created from lottery wins during the 12 months.

In South Australia, lottery history was made in May when a single player scored a staggering $150 million Powerball prize.

AUSTRALIA’S LUCKIEST LOTTO HOT SPOTS

Recent data also revealed the nation’s luckiest Lotto hot spots and postcodes.

In Victoria, the CBD came up trumps, with the postcode 3000 landing four division one winning entries and a jaw-dropping total of $66.4 million.

In NSW, four division one winning entries sold in Sydney’s CBD — postcode 2000 — netting prizes totalling $8.1 million.

In Queensland, the postcode 4655 for Eli Waters/Urraween sold four division one winning entries, totalling $4.4 million.

In Tasmania, the postcode 7320 for Burnie sold the Apple Isle’s biggest division one prize, a hefty $30 million.

In South Australia, the postcode 5108 for Salisbury sold the state’s biggest division one prize, the aforementioned history-making Powerball $150 million jackpot.

In the Top End, the postcode 0810 for Casuarina delivered the Northern Territory’s biggest division one prize of $2.3 million.

In WA, the postcode 6054 for Bassendean sold two division one winning entries.

HOT, COLD LOTTO NUMBERS

While each Powerball number has an equal chance of being drawn, there are some that have been more successful than others.

From the main barrel, where seven winning numbers are drawn from a possible 35, the most frequently drawn have been 17, 7, 3, and 9. Whereas the least frequently have been 15, 33, 31 and 26.

Of the Powerball, where only a single is drawn from 20 balls, the most frequently drawn Powerball numbers have been 2 and 4. The least frequent have been 14 and 16.

‘UNIQUE’ WAY AUSSIES ARE BOOSTING THEIR CHANCES

Matt Hart, spokesman for The Lott, said players had their own unique methods when it came to boosting their winning chances.

“Some players tell us they deliberately pick outlets that have recently sold a major lottery prize in the hope of continuing the winning streak, while other players choose different outlets, believing lightning won’t strike twice,” he said.

“While we saw pockets of major lottery prizes across Australian states and territories this year, it’s important to remember that a division one win can land anywhere at any time.

“As many lottery winners tell us, you’ve got to be in it for the chance to win it.

“It will also be interesting to see if this year’s lottery hotspots continue their winning streak in financial year 2025.”

In the past financial year, more than half (12 of 19) of the Powerball division one winning entries were with QuickPicks, where the lottery terminal randomly generates the numbers.

And almost half of those winning tickets, were with PowerHit entries, which guarantee the lucky Powerball number you need to win division one.

Entries into Powerball draw 1475 on Thursday, August 22, can be purchased at any licenced lottery outlet, online from thelott.com or via The Lott mobile app. The draw closes at 7.30pm AEST.
