Keith Urban fans will get a teaser of his playing live this week as he returns home to launch his new album High.

But they will have to wait until August next year to see him busting out the hits of Australian stages after Urban scrapped his previous record 615, named after the postcode for Nashville.

The 56-year-old country superstar had been making that record during tour pitstops when back home in the music capital where he lives with wife Nicole Kidman and their daughters Sunday and Faith.

“It all started to domino when I aborted this album that I thought this was the album; I turned it in at the beginning of ‘23 and thought ‘Shit, this is not it,’” Urban said ahead of arriving in Sydney on Saturday.

“I cherrypicked four songs and started all over again and I knew, in February 2023 it was going to take me another year to make the album I wanted to make.

“So that pushed the touring to 2025. I’d rather put the record out and have people have some time to live with the album as well.”

Urban has already given fans half the record to live with, sharing five singles ahead of its release on September 20.

The generous drip-feed of new songs both rewards fans who have been waiting since 2020 for a new Urban album and is a sign of the times as streaming has shifted music listening habits to singles and playlists rather than full records.

“I’ve never released almost half the album. It’s very hard to find or make time to listen to anyone’s album these days so to give people songs steadily let’s everybody just tackle one song at a time,” he said.

Urban will be performing his new stuff this week on a promotional tour for High which is released on September 20, playing tracks for fans at an iHeartLive session on Monday and then pops up at the Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre on Tuesday for Ridin’ High: A Night of Music & Conversation with the Betoota Advocate.

Urban brings it back home again with his High and Alive World Tour to Australia next August.

He opens at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on August 13 and then plays the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on August 15 and 16, Wollongong’s WIN Entertainment Centre on August 20, Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on August 22 and 23. Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on August 25 and 26 and Adelaide Entertainment Centre on August 28.
