Jane Sanderson bestseller Mix Tape to be made into new four-part miniseries

Following on from the enormous success of Colin from Accounts, Binge has commissioned a new drama to be filmed in Australia and Ireland, adding to its slate of originals.
Mix Tape is a four-part miniseries, adapted from the hugely popular and critically acclaimed 2020 novel of the same name by Jane Sanderson.
Binge commissioning and content executive director Alison Hurbert-Burns said the co-production – between Foxtel Group, Australia’s Aquarius Films and one of Ireland’s leading TV and film production companies, Subotica, will reinforce the streamer’s commitment to creating premium, must-watch original stories.
“We’re searching for stories that take our audience into a world they can lose themselves in but also be challenged by, and Mix Tape is a nostalgic, music filled love story that will jump off the screens and make you say, what if?,” she said.
“A co-production allows us to tell this Australian and international story at a scale that will capture the audience’s imagination …”
Drawing comparisons with Sally Rooney’s best-selling Normal People, Mix Tape starts in Sheffield, England in 1989 with Daniel and Alison’s all-encompassing teen romance. He’s the first to make her the mix tape of the title, forever etched in their memories through the music of their generation. Now living on opposite sides of the world, a new chapter begins for them when they reconnect through a song from their past. Both curious to understand if this is the love – and life – they were meant to have.
Subotica’s Aoife O’Sullivan and Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aquarius Films’ Angie Fielde and Polly Staniford said Mix Tape will take viewers back in time to that intoxicating feeling of first love.
“It’s a classic boy-meets-girl love story with a banging soundtrack that will tug at the heartstrings and have audiences reminiscing and asking themselves: What if you had a second chance at first love?,” they said in a statement.
Screen Australia’s Head of Content Grainne Brunsdon said they were thrilled to partner with Binge on the delightful series.
“Mix Tape hits all the right notes – a tender tale of young love, nostalgia, friendship and celebrates the power of music,” she said. “What’s not to love? (It’s) bound to become a favourite with audiences – especially those who love a good soundtrack. ”
Screen Ireland’s head of television Andrew Byrne said his team was delighted to
be part of the Irish/Australian co-production.
“We’re proud to continue supporting Irish talent and the production of high-end TV drama; working closely with international commissioners and film agencies to tell original stories like this for audiences at home and around the world,” he said.
Sanditon writer Jo Spain has worked on the script, and Mix Tape will be directed by Lucy Gaffy (Totally, Completely Fine; Irreverent; Amazing Grace and Doctor, Doctor) with investment from Screen Australia, and Screen Ireland.
