THIRTY workers and heavy machinery will be shipped to Green Island ahead of extensive repair works to the tourist attraction’s 59-year-old jetty.
Ports North has been engaged by the Queensland Government to undertake maintenance on the public jetty.
The project has prompted the resort, owned by Quicksilver, to close for more than four months.
“We have worked closely with the Green Island Resort and other operators for more than 18 months, to ensure the least possible disruption,” a Ports North spokesman said.
“The jetty is a reinforced concrete structure and, in a marine environment, has deteriorated over time. About one third of the underside of the wharf will need repair, as well as a number of concrete piles.”
High-quality sound screens will be used to reduce noise impact on the day-visitor areas on the island and the work will be carried out from suspended platforms below the wharf.
All machinery and a water treatment plant will be set up on floating pontoons close to the wharf.
The work will involve removing the deteriorated concrete and corroded reinforcing steel and repairing or replacing the steel before new concrete is laid.
Once the concrete has cured, sealers will be applied to limit the effects of salt water.
The demolition water and waste materials will be captured, contained and returned to the mainland. All works are in accordance with Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority requirements and Queensland Parks and Wildlife permits.
