Proof that the Greens have lost the plot – did they ever have it in the first place, I hear you ask – was the dreadful idea to host a rave dance party fundraiser on Anzac Day.
And you can’t tell me a miraculous appreciation of the word ‘respect’ is the reason they’ve swiftly rescheduled it.
They’ve been shamed into it.
The WA branch was to host the six-hour event at a bar and tattoo parlour in Perth, which might sound uber-cool to its young and aptly “green” fan base, but to anyone else, it is nothing short of disgraceful.
April 25 is a sacred day to honour the men and women who have fought and died for our country and to acknowledge those serving in the Australian Defence Force now.
It is not a day to dance under a disco ball – no matter how much wacky tobacky you’ve smoked.
On Tuesday morning Opposition Leader Peter Dutton called the rave party “completely inappropriate”.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese tread softly for the sake of his political ambitions, merely saying that Anzac Day was “not a day for normal business as usual”. Yes, we know.
But the biggest laugh went to Greens’ leader Adam Bandt, who told a press conference in Brisbane he knew nothing about the dance fundraiser.
How could he not?
Afterwards, a spokesman for Mr Bandt said it was a matter for the party, and not Mr Bandt, who would not be providing an opinion about it.
What utter nonsense – Mr Bandt is the leader of the party yet this abomination of a fundraiser has nothing to do with him?
How then to explain its cancellation within hours of making headlines?
At lunchtime on Tuesday Greens WA co-ordinator Chilla Bulbeck said the event would be “rescheduled”.
I understand why many younger voters are disillusioned with the major parties – but that does not mean the next step is to endorse the Greens, whose policies on drug legalisation, housing, national defence and a raft of other issues are dangerously irresponsible.
The staging of a political rave party on Anzac Day – and its speedy scuppering – shows just how disorganised and delusional the Greens really are.
