With an Italian heritage, you would think NSW Sports Minister John Sidoti would know his way around a soccer ball.

The Liberal MP obviously thought so given he volunteered to show-off his skills while participating in a game with some “current and future Matildas” yesterday as part of supporting the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 bid.

But instead of a Maradona moment, the Drummoyne MP instead found himself stumbling over the ball in a football fail that would have made Mr Bean proud.

Mr Sidoti attempted to play football while wearing pointed leather shoes, presumably Italian, and a decision that may have been to blame arguably the most spectacular faceplant ever witnessed on a school sporting field.

At least Mr Sidoti, whose father is from Aeolian islands of Sicily and mother from the tiny town of Terra Nuova in Calabria called Terra Nuova, owned it, posting the football fail on his Facebook page.

“My footwork used to be sharper,” he wrote.

“I’ll leave the football to the Matildas while I concentrate on helping NSW and Australia win the FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup.”
