Divers Den will hold its first Seal Team sessions, or “aquamissions”, this Tuesday and Thursday.

Sessions are run by trained professionals and will be held in the heated pool at Divers Den’s central Cairns training centre.

Open to children from the age of eight, the program follows on from the skills learned at Divers Den’s popular Scuba Kids program in June.

Divers Den general manager Sonjha Forbes said the popularity of Scuba Kids showed there was a demand for youth diving courses.

“It’s great to see local families getting their kids into scuba diving from a young age,” she said.

“Diving is a great way for families to spend time together and explore our natural environment, and Seal Team is a fun, safe progression towards open-water diving.”

Skills covered in the Seal Team program include how to use snorkel and scuba equipment, controlling depth and buoyancy, equalising the ears and mask, monitoring air supply, hand signals, and safe ascent.

After five sessions, children will receive a certificate, T-shirt and logbook decal.

The program includes a Graduation Day trip to the Frankland Islands.

A Master Seal Team program is also available, consisting of a further 10 specialty aquamissions, including a night dive, rescue skills and wreck diving.
