Cairns man Scott Oastler man has turned a backyard hobby of making pallet furniture into a booming business. Find out how he did it.

CAIRNS man Scott Oastler has turned a backyard hobby of making pallet furniture into a booming business.

Starting about two years ago, demand for custom-made furniture such as bench seats, beds, tables and planter boxes has ramped up.

As a result, Mr Oastler is opening new store FNQ Pallet Furniture, at Portsmith, where he will carry out his work and sell his creations.

“Pretty much anything you can’t buy at a shop, we’ll have a go at making for you,” he said.

“It’s a lot of fun, you get to be creative.

“I’ve just done another couple of little swinging day beds for people.

“You hang them up by chains from the rafters in old Queenslanders and they look fantastic.”

Along with making beautiful pieces of furniture, Mr Oastler’s work is also helping reduce what goes into landfill.

“All of the pine pallets that are going to go into landfill, we recycle those into whatever furniture we can,” he said.

“We are always on the lookout for timber pallets for our recycled creations. I’m happy to come collect on a regular basis or just one off.”
