Spiralling costs of airfares and lingering uncertainty over Covid waves have prompted Aussie families to delay making holiday getaway plans, but fear not – super-cute and affordable options are still available.
Travel industry experts say many families are hoping to keep travel costs in check by choosing hyper-local trips with longer stays at relaxed accommodation venues.
Many have been put off flying by the soaring cost of airfares, with the ACCC recently finding the cost of the cheapest economy tickets has increased by 56 per cent since April.
Airfares hit a two-year high in August – usually prime time for families to start booking their end-of-year getaways.
“The number one concern is value for money,” online booking service Wotif managing director Daniel Finch said.
“Our research shows that 70 per cent of travellers are planning on doing multiple domestic trips this year, versus international trips, so it will be sustained and not just busy for summer.”
Mr Finch said they were seeing a surge in interest in some unique destinations.
“There are two trends: capital cities are on the comeback, and people are also looking at regional and rural areas. Think places like Dubbo or Bendigo, places that are inland. That’s new for us,” he said.
Concern about costs was also prompting many families to look for home-style type stays, where they can prepare their own meals. Mr Finch said the average family could save up to $700 over the course of their holidays simply by dining in.
While some places have been snapped up, there are still plenty of good options available over the holiday period, according to Airbnb Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand Susan Wheeldon
“Now more than ever Aussies are looking to maximise their travel and stay in unique spaces to create a full experience with their holiday,” Ms Wheeldon said.
“Australians are looking not only for unique accommodation, but also unique destinations, to help take a break from everyday life.”
