Man shot after allegedly firing at police in tense standoff

A man has been shot after allegedly firing at police, sparking a tense standoff that closed down parts of a major regional city.

A man who allegedly fired at police before sparking a tense standoff in Queensland’s southeast has been taken into custody after he was shot by an officer.

Police and the POLAIR helicopter began tracking an allegedly stolen Suzuki Vitara shortly before 7pm in the Browns Plains area in Logan on Friday.

A tyre deflation device was used, but when officers approached the vehicle they allege the driver and sole occupant fired shorts towards police.

A pursuit was commenced during which police allege the man fired further shots towards officers before ditching the car at Hillcrest and fleeing into a waiting Kia Cerato.

The police helicopter tracked the stolen vehicle to a Bix Court address where an emergency declaration was made shortly before 9pm while officers negotiated with the man.

An exclusion zone was set up under the Public Safety Preservation Act, or PSPA, with residents ordered to stay in doors while negotiations took place with police.

Those negotiations proved unsuccessful and shortly before 1am the man was shot by police before being rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

Police said no officers were physically injured during the incident and the man remained in hospital where he was undergoing further treatment.

The matter will be investigated by the state’s Ethical Standards Command, subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
