A 68-year-old man will be charged with murder after the alleged domestic violence killing of his partner.
On October 12 police attended a residential address in Katherine East following a concern for welfare.
On site, police allege they found a 61-year-old woman with serious injuries after a suspected assault.
She was taken to Katherine Hospital before being flown to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.
More than a month later, the woman died in hospital on Thursday.
NT Police Assistant Commissioner Travis Wurst told media on Monday the couple had an off and on relationship for a number of years, and had a known history of domestic violence.
He said the alleged offender, who had been arrested and charged with aggravated assault, would be charged with murder when he next faces court on November 27.
The 68-year-old remains on remand and has not entered any plea.
“That unfortunately brings, since June 1 of this year, the number of (alleged) domestic related homicides in the Northern Territory to eight,” Mr Wurst said.
“I can’t keep standing here and saying to you that this has got to stop.
“It just has to happen. The Northern Territory Police will continue to work very hard to prevent domestic violence from happening with all of our partners – the government, with all the non government sector, because we need to stop it from happening the first instance. “When we get to the point where someone has died as a consequence of a domestic violence incident, it’s far too late. They cannot come back.
“There are processes and systems where people will go to court and the coroner will have an opportunity to explore the why and the how, but that’s far too late.
“We need to stand up now.”
