Magnitude 2.7 earthquake recorded east of Batchelor, Lake Bennett

There’s been a slight rumble east of the Rum Jungle in the Top End. Read what we know.

East of the Rum Jungle has been rumbling in the Top End as an earthquake has been recorded in the region.

An alert from Geoscience Australia said a magnitude 2.7 earthquake rumbled about 40km east of Batchelor on Monday morning.

The alert states the earthquake was recorded at 6.38 Monday morning.

The earthquake had a depth of 10km, according to an alert.

Last Thursday, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake was recorded south west of Tennant Creek.

The Tennant Creek earthquake also had a depth of 10km.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Tonga on Monday morning, prompting a brief tsunami warning for residents of the island.

The tsunami warning did not extend to the Australian mainland and has since been cancelled.
