The Local Government Association of the Northern Territory is searching for a new president, following the end of Kon Vatskalis’ five year tenure at the top job.

An election will be held for the president at LGANT’s November 19 Annual General Meeting, along with the elections of two other casual vacancies.

In the interim, LGANT’s two vice presidents, Brian Pedwell and Allison Bitar, will jointly undertake the responsibilities of the president.

LGANT chief executive Mary Watson said the association extended its “sincere appreciation” to Mr Vatskalis for five years of “dedicated leadership and service”.

“Throughout his presidency, Kon has been a committed advocate for local government in the Northern Territory,” she said.

“His leadership has led the sector through many challenges while strengthening the collective voice of councils.

“His contribution has been deeply valued by the LGANT Board and members.

“We thank Kon for his commitment and service, and we wish him every success in his future endeavours.

Ms Watson said nominees did not have to be a mayor of a council to be elected.

“Nominees must be an elected member and their council must be a financial member of LGANT to be eligible,” she said.

“Individuals need to have, or show proof that they’ve applied for, a Directors ID. Further to this, the roles and responsibilities of the president are outlined in LGANT’s Governance Charter.”

Current board members include Alice Springs Town Councillor Ms Bitar, Victoria Daly Regional Council Mayor Mr Pedwell, Wagait Shire Councillor Peter Clee, Tiwi Islands Regional Council Mayor Lynette De Santis, City of Darwin councillor Peter Pangquee and West Arnhem Regional Council Mayor James Wood.
