Round 5 of the DRU dished up another weekend of entertaining Top End rugby with some exciting match-ups across the board.
Like last season, the NT News will select the top performers and point scorers from across the senior Darwin Rugby Competition every round.
Find out who from your club and team made the list below.
ROUND 5
ASIVELI RAUGA (University Pirates, A-grade)
Once again the Pirate was immense for his side in what was another hard fought victory for last season’s runner ups. Rauga scored a first half double that propelled University to its 23-20 victory over Casuarina.
ROBBIE BUTCHER (University Pirates, A-grade)
The veteran might have had his radar off for the extra points but he struck the Gilbert sweetly when it mattered most, slotting a game winning penalty goal in the 80th minute.
TOBEY ATKINSON (Darwin Dragons, A-grade)
Putting together another monster performance in the forwards Atkinson was at his best yet again, giving 110 per cent every carry and tackle all game long.
HAYDEN AUSTINE (Swampdogs, B-grade)
The scrum half came in clutch against Katherine on Saturday. Both teams scoring two tries and converting just one from the tee it was Austine’s three penalty goals that secured his Dogs the 21-15 win.
CECILIA MISOB (Darwin Dragons, Women)
Scraping by with the win and avoiding a massive upset, Misob was integral in Darwin’s 14-12 victory, scoring a five pointer and kicking 2/2.
ALEX MANOLIS (University Pirates, B-grade)
Despite being on the wrong end of a 31-15 scoreline the Pirate snagged two tries on the wing.
SOUTH DARWIN(B-grade)
Securing its second win of the season South Darwin monstered a poor Darwin Dragons at the weekend. The Rabbitohs smashed the Dragons to the tune of 57-0, in which nine different players crossed the paint for a try.
ROUND 4
DAN CAKAU (South Darwin, A-grade)
Quickly pressing his case for the most potent attacking weapon in the DRU, Cakau was causing nightmares for Darwin’s backs, scoring three meat pies and kicking one from the spot in his sides 44-19 victory.
VINCENT MEHN (South Darwin, A-grade)
Never one to be kept quiet for long, Mehn jumped in on the action at the weekend scoring a brace for the Bunnies.
WISE AKISI (Casuarina Cougars, A-grade)
The centre had a successful night against the misfiring Crocs, snagging a double in the hard-fought 17-9 victory.
VICTORIA ALLEY (Palmerston Crocs, Women)
The back had her fingerprints on most of the Crocs attacking success yet again. Alley crossed for a try and kicked two in the 29-0 win over Casuarina.
NATHAN EVERETT (Swampdogs, B-grade)
For the third round on the trot the scrum half was a big part in his Swampdogs triumph at the weekend, scoring one of the Dogs’ six tries and kicked three from the tee in the 36-17 win over the Rabbitohs. 1 try 3 conversions in 36-17 victory over Rabbitohs
ELLIE NIKKI (Darwin Dragons, Women)
The captain didn’t miss a beat at the weekend, scoring a hat-trick of tires in her Dragons’ 43-0 demolition job of South Darwin.
ETHAN DOUGLAS (Palmerston Crocs, A-grade)
In a game that proved difficult on the attacking side of the ball, playing fullback Douglas did a solid job defensively and was a catalyst as to why the dual reigning champions didn’t blow out the score. Douglas also recorded three penalty goals, the Crocs’ only points in the eight point defeat.
ROUND 3
ROBBIE BUTCHER (University Pirates, A-grade)
Butcher couldn’t escape the action in his Pirates clash with the Crocs, scoring a try, kicking 4/4 and two penalties in this teams 34-19 win.
ASIVELI RAUGA(University Pirates, A-grade)
The open side caused problems for the Crocs on their line as he crossed for a brace in the 15 point victory.
NIKKI’S (Darwin Dragons, B-grade)
It was an attacking masterclass by the Nikki’s as the trio dominated the game. Moses bagged himself a double while both Caleb and Ethan recorded a try and a conversion each.
BON JOHNSTON(Palmerston Crocs, A-grade)
The flanker was the epitome of heart out in the middle as he consistently dug deep, made hard tackles and fight despite being in the losing outfit.
TERRY GILLETT (Katherine Roos, B-grade)
Much like last round it was the brilliance of Roos fullback Gillett that propelled the Katherine based side to the win. Gillett scored one try and went 3/3 in the 21-19 win against South Darwin.
MATT KELLY (Casuarina Cougars, B-grade)
Kelly produced two five pointers in Casuarina’s big 43-0 win over the Crocs.
DAN CAKAU (South Darwin, A-grade)
The teenager was as cool as a cucumber against the back-to-back reigning champions Casuarina, snagging two tries in the one score victory.
NATHAN EVERETT (Swampdogs, B-grade)
In what was a grindy affair Everett was the Swampdog who stood tall scoring a try as well as kicking 2/2 in the 14-0 win over the cats.
DEBBIE GIMINI (South Darwin, Women)
For the second week in a row the Bunny was relentless when in attack, scoring two times in South’s 30-14 win over the Cougars.
NATALIA GRANT (University Pirates, Women)
The half was at the epicentre of her teams 24-7 win over the Crocs as she kicked two from the tee and crossed the paint for a double.
ROUND 2
TERRY GILLETT (Katherine Roos, B-grade)
The Roos full-back’s kicking proved the winning factor against the Bunnies. Both sides scoring three tries each, it was Gillett’s 3/3 that sealed the 21-19 point win.
DEBBIE GIMINI (South Darwin, Women)
The MVP in what was the upset of the round, Gimini was unstoppable against the reigning champions. The bunny scored a hat trick and a goal in the 22-15 win over University.
COURTNEY TAMATI (Darwin Dragons, Women)
A winger with the skills of a centre, Tamati was enormous at the weekend. Crossing for a brace, she was very good off the ball, forcing numerous errors in defence.
JAZMIN LORD (Darwin Dragons, Women)
Possessing the golden touch, Lord crossed the paint three times in the Dragons monster 59-0 win against Casuarina.
CECILIA MISOB (Darwin Dragons, Women)
Misob was kicking goals for fun against the Cougars, nailing 7/9 from the spot.
ROBBIE BUTCHER (University Pirates, A-grade)
The calm and reliable fly half was on target with the boot, slotting three penalties and one conversion.
TOBEY ATKINSON (Darwin Dragons, A-grade)
Atkinson’s determined and dogged defensive efforts at prop were a highlight against the reigning champions in what was otherwise a disappointing outing for the Dragons.
TREY CROWLEY (Casuarina Cougars, A-grade)
Doing a bit of everything, Crowley scored one try, kicked two conversions and one penalty goal in the 27-0 win over the Bunnies.
JAMES CARDWELL (Casuarina Cougars, A-grade)
The second rower channelled his inner back against the Dragons, crossing for a double.
STYLIANOS VRONTOS (University Pirates, A-grade)
The fullback was in the thick of the action for the second round in a row, bagging a brace in the Pirates’ 31-15 victory over South Darwin.
ROUND 1
* (B-grade competition had a BYE)
KANAE GIMINI (South Darwin, A-grade)
The bunny was in the thick of it during what was a tight clash with Palmerston, crossing the paint for a brace.
JACOB RAINGER (South Darwin, A-grade)
Gimini’s partner in crime, Rainger also recorded a double in the Bunnies five point victory over the Crocs.
STYLIANOS VRONTOS (University Pirates, A-grade)
The speedster didn’t miss a beat against Darwin, putting together a clutch performance for the Pirates. Vrontos scored a try, kicked one from the spot and slotted three penalty goals in the 26-24 victory.
LACHLAN RAYCHAUDHURI (Darwin Dragons, A-grade)
The Dragon was one of his teams best in their narrow loss, scoring a meat pie and hitting 2/4 from the tee.
NICKI HICKMAN (Palmerston Crocs, Women)
Hickman was electric in a new faced Crocs outfit who got their 2024-25 campaign going with a roaring start. The Croc scored two five pointers and kicked a conversion in the 36-0 drubbing over South Darwin.
DAILENE DOYLE (Palmerston Crocs, Women)
Another Croc who had a superb start to the season, Doyle scored a double in a solid performance.
ELLIE NIKI (Darwin Dragons, Women)
The dual code weapon was at her best once again for the Dragons, crossing the paint for a brace in her sides statement grand final rematch victory over the Pirates.
JAZMIN LORD (Darwin Dragons, Women)
Like Niki, Lord jumped in on the try scoring action, scoring two tries in the Dragons 32-5 win over University.
