Totally Mum Made: Dannielle Murfet and Chantelle Slocombe open Beauty Point shop

A pair of Tasmanian best friends who have three kids each and both volunteer at their local P&C association have taken the huge step of turning their craft passion into a brick and mortar store.

Two best friends from northern Tasmania who have six kids between them and both volunteer at their local school P&C association have found a way to harness the “chaos” of their lives into creativity, opening a permanent brick-and-mortar boutique.

Beauty Point pair Dannielle Murfet and Chantelle Slocombe opened Totally Mum Made at 181 Charles St, inside what’s known locally as the ‘old Cameron’s building,’ on April 29.

“It keeps our sanity,” Ms Murfet said.

“Life is just chaos for us.”

The pair has been crafting “pretty much everything you can think of” since 2019: baby clothes, pet accessories, earrings and jewellery, key chains, scrunchies and more, Ms Murfet said.

“We just started doing crap together, it helps with the anxiety and maintaining mum life. It’s something to do instead of just doing kids stuff all the time,” she said.

Totally Mum Made, which previously existed as an online store, was a release valve for their at-times overwhelming lives.

Both women, volunteers at the Beaconsfield Primary School P&C Association, have three children each, ranging from toddlers to teenagers.

They make concessions, though, to the fact they both have family responsibilities that include raising children with high needs.

One is that the business only opens from 10am–2pm Monday to Friday.

“We close the shop to be able to do stuff within the school. I’ve got two children at Beaconsfield Primary and a two-year-old. I’ve raised my baby around the business, he comes in with me and sleeps in a pram with a bottle,” Ms Murfet said.

Since the pair became mothers, their lives are nearly unrecognisable to what they were before – but neither would change the journey nor the outcome.

“We chose to be sisters, we deal with each other’s nuttiness,” Ms Murfet said.

She said that Totally Mum Made was a labour of love, not a quest for treasure.

“We don’t actually make any money, everything just goes back into the business,” Ms Murfet said.

“One day we’ll draw a wage.”
