Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson says Tasmania’s largest multipurpose community sporting and recreation facility is evidence of what can be achieved when all three levels of government work together.
Tender for the construction of the $43.6m Northern Suburbs Community Recreation Hub at Mowbray has been awarded to Tasmanian firm Vos Construction and Joinery, with the project receiving $15m from the federal government, $27.5m from the state government, and $1.1m from the Launceston Council.
Mr Ferguson said the project would support up to 230 local jobs, including up to 10 apprenticeships.
“The northern Hub is an important recreational and sporting facility that’s been the subject of a lot of intensive work between all three levels of government,” he said.
“I must say this journey has been challenging, but we will show that by working together, you can get great outcomes.
“We are going to deliver something for the northern suburbs which is overdue and is going to fill an important gap in our local community.”
The Hub will cover a building area of more than 10,000sq m of usable indoor space, including four indoor netball courts; three multi-use basketball, volleyball, and futsal courts; rock climbing, gym, boxing, and weightlifting facilities; and open spaces for community gatherings of up to 800 people.
Tasmanian Senator Helen Polley said the project was great news for Tasmania’s local economy and applauded the state and local governments.
“As the Deputy Premier said, when the three tiers of government work together, then they are then going to deliver the best outcomes for Tasmanians,” Senator Polley said.
“As a girl from the northern suburbs, I know it is well and truly overdue to have this type of facility, and this will mean so much to the northern suburbs.
“It will provide a solid and reliable home base for many local and state sporting teams for years to come.”
City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said that when complete, the Hub will be a modern, fit-for-purpose recreation centre for the greater region, not just Launceston’s northern suburbs.
“It has been nearly four decades since a major new indoor sports complex was built in Launceston, and the demand for a facility like this has been high,” Mr Garwood said.
