Tasmania Fire Service investigators have concluded a deadly shed fire which claimed the life of a three-year-old and left another fighting for life with third-degree burns was a “tragic” accident.

Leonardo Clarkson, 3, perished in the November 30 blaze in a shed behind a Verdun St, Mowbray residence.

Roman Clarkson, 4, understood to be Leonardo’s cousin, miraculously survived.

On Tuesday, Tasmania Police Detective Inspector Mel Groves said TFS investigators had determined the fire was “likely caused by accidental ignition near a fuel source”.

“The scene was extensively examined and the circumstances were investigated,” Detective Inspector Groves said.

“The police investigation is now complete and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”

“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with everyone affected.”

Emergency services were originally alerted to the blaze about 1.30pm on November 30.

The shed, located at the back of the property, was fully alight when crews arrived minutes later.

Leonardo was found deceased while Roman was taken to Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries.

Roman’s parents Cassandra Gunton and Jerome Clarkson weren’t at the Verdun St residence when the fire occurred, the Mercury previously reported.

Cassandra arrived at the scene after she finished work to collect Roman and his sister Mavis, 1, and found her son being treated by emergency services.

Roman’s aunty Shyla Gunton said her nephew was “amazing, perfect, gorgeous and funny”.

“I remember the day he was born, watching him come into this world was one of the best days next to my own children. He’s my world,” she said.

“He’s full of energy and loves the world. You won’t find a sweeter, kinder soul anywhere else.”
