One of the state’s busiest hospitals has been hit by a significant gastro outbreak, Tasmania’s health department say.
On Thursday, the Department of Health released a statement saying a number of patients at the Launceston General Hospital were suffering from “gastroenteritis-like symptoms across several wards”.
“We advise the public that Ward 3D, Ward 5D and Ward 6D will be restricted for visitors until further notice,” a health spokesperson said.
“An outbreak management team is reviewing the situation, and our focus is on ensuring the safety of patients and staff.
“We ask the community to help us during this time by only attending the LGH Emergency department if it is an emergency.”
The Department of Health ask that people presenting at the emergency department who are not facing life-threatening illness or injury can seek alternatives, including after-hours GP services in the Launceston area, the Urgent Care Clinic at Launceston Medical Centre, pharmacies, or phoning Healthdirect 1800 022 222 for free and trusted health advice.
In an emergency, people should always phone triple zero (000) or present to the Emergency Department.
