Ket Baker Belmont break-in: intruder flees after triggering alarms
The owner of a small business in Belmont is warning others in the area to take security precautions, after an intruder broke into her bakery in the early hours of Saturday, leaving workers “unsettled”.
A bakery owner has urged local businesses to boost security after a cyclist broke into her Belmont shop and fled when alarms sounded.
The founder of Ket Baker, Miek Paulus, said the bakery’s Belmont shop was broken into about 4.40am on Saturday by a cyclist who fled empty-handed after triggering alarms.
Ms Paulus said staff arrived on Saturday to find the store in a mess with the incident caught on camera.
“It’s not fun, waking up to look at the pictures of a stranger looking in your shop, rummaging through the drawers,” she said.
“Thankfully no one was hurt, but it’s been unsettling for our team.
“But we don’t keep cash on premises so luckily nothing was stolen.”
Ms Paulus said it was concerning the offender was caught on their camera at 10pm and was seen scouting other shops “all night”.
“My message to other business would be do everything you possibly can to increase security,” she said.
“We’ve been doing Ket Baker for 10 years now, I know how to create an environment that is safe for our staff and visitors.
“As a small-business owner you need to be prepared, the cameras motion detectors and the alarm were very good things.
She said while it was “sad” to her store being broken intp, she felt sorry for the desperation that caused this kind of behaviour.
“We’ve done our due diligence to make sure we were safe and the business wasn’t damage but I think it’s sad for the people who feel the need to do this,” she said.
“It’s an act of desperation but he didn’t get what he wanted.
She said Ket Baker donated to food relief charities regularly, so there was no need for robbery.
“I will keep on supporting the homeless people, I do believe this person needs to come to terms with the consequences of this act.
“The great thing is that the community has really showed up.
“Thank you to everyone who has checked in and supported our team.”
The incident was reported to Victoria Police.
