In 2023, Daniel Jay Waller was a Metalsmith Corporal in the military, teaching everything from weapons training to vehicle courses and technical trade training.

“I was in the Corp of RAEME, Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers,” he said.

“I’m extremely passionate about teaching.”

Now, he’s using his passion to help kickstart one of the country’s biggest driving schools in North Queensland.

“I really loved instructing in the military, so I wanted to continue that passion and teach kids how to drive,” he said.

Jim’s Driving School has come to Mount Low, with bookings now open for locals.

The brand new extension of Jim’s Group originated in South Australia, and has recently expanded to parts of Queensland, including Townsville.

Jim’s Driving School Mount Low instructor Daniel Jay Waller said there’s “massive demand” for driving instructors in North Queensland.

“There can be up to a month or two wait to get in to see an instructor,” he said.

Mr Waller said lessons will be tailored to students’ needs, helping them get the most out of the Q-SAFE driving test.

“Each lesson isn’t just getting in a car and driving here and there, we try to make a tailored plan so the students get the best learning outcome possible,” he said.

“We’ll do a report at the end of each lesson letting the student know how well they did and looking at the areas we need to focus on for the next lesson.”

Booking opened Monday January 6, and Mr Waller said locals should get in quick if they want a spot.

“We ended up booking five or six people in one day. We’re hoping for that to keep going,” he said.

“There’s heaps of positions available, but if they keep going the way they are, hopefully we’ll hit the ground running.”

Bookings can be made online, lessons start January 28.
